Chapter 13.

Tiffany.

Tears flowed down my face as I stared at my best friend, lying on her death bed. Ruby was as pale as Snow White from the movies, but her lips weren’t a ruby red, and her hair wasn’t a raven black.

Instead, my friend’s normally lustrous red hair was limp and carrot colored. Even her lips were pale.

“What’s happened to her?” I sobbed, stumbling over to the bed where I landed on the mattress.

I slid onto the bed with her and reached out for her hand. “I thought the stasis spell was going to help her!”

My mom put an arm around my shoulders. “It’s meant to, honey. And she is stable. But unfortunately, as you can, she’s getting worse.”

My throat burned with tears, and I swallowed hard to force the lump down so I could speak again. I’d been hoping, so much, that I would arrive at Ruby’s to find her awake and healthy, and our father’s human.

Stupid, Tiffany. Stupid.

As if I was going to be central to breaking this spell.

Bella was sitting on the other side of the bed, Ruby’s mom hovering around the room. “The moms have done everything they can, Tiff. But it’s possible we’re going to have to...”

“No,” I said, shaking my head. “No. You can’t. We need more time.”

Bella cleared her throat and I turned around to face her. “Have you mated with your triad?”

I nodded, another tear slipping unwanted down my cheek.

Traitor. I’m trying to be strong here.

“Yeah, I did. I was hoping it would help.”

Bella smiled softly. “Yeah, so did I. Obviously our happiness isn’t linked to breaking this curse, after all.”

I wiped away the next tear that fell. “Only our deaths.”

“Don’t talk like that,” Mom said. “We’re not going to let anything happen to you. And we’re going to save Ruby. There has to be a way.”

“What about her baby?” I asked.

Jackson, who I hadn’t noticed hanging around the back corner of the room, stood up and walked out.

That answered my question.

My guys’ voices came from the front of the house, and a wave of happiness spread through me. There was some good to focus on, but not here. Not today.

Rather than railing against the inevitable, I chose to focus on what could be done. “So what are the options?”

“Abort the pregnancy is probably the best one at this stage,” my mom said, and Ruby’s mom sobbed.

She covered her mouth and closed her eyes.

My heart went out to Sherie. I loved Ruby like a sister, but her mom must be in so much anguish over this decision. Not that we really had much of a choice.

Lose one, or lose them both.

“Okay,” I said, nodding, taking it all in. “What else?”

My mom sniffed, her eyes sad. “There isn’t anything else.” “How long can you give us before you do anything?” I asked.

Forgive me, Ruby.

Mom glanced over at Cherie. “About twenty-four hours. No more. After that, I don’t think we’ll be able to bring Ruby back at all.”

That was another day. We had time. Then I realized we were missing someone.
